Turbulance – Blood Dem Out

Depending on where you are in the world, those first warm, rejuvenating days of spring may or may not have hit you.  If it has, here’s a track to celebrate.  If not, you’ve got a lot to look forward to.

Don’t Tornado On My Parade

Dan Black-attack

Dan Black is an astounding person.  We should all take the time to thank him. Do that by reading this post.

First, “HPNYTZ:”  The classic by Notorious B.I.G., sung by Mr. Black, set to Symphonies/Umbrella.  The whole backing track, plus Dan Black singing such a G song in choir-boy falsetto… makes for a great combo.

Off of his mixtape, Weird Science, comes “Gimmie Into The Cloudbusting.”  I hesitate to say anything more about this song other than just click play.

And just so no one accuses me of throwing free music onto the net, check out DB’s album, UN, available where all music is sold [iTunes].

Gorillaz “Plastic Island” Dropped Today

And boy is it eclectic.  The Gorillaz know no bounds.  Honestly, this album is so diverse.  They have collaborations from artists like Snoop Dogg, Mick Jones, Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, and The Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music.

Who? What?

The end result is a 16 track release with a variety of songs whose common denominator is that “Gorillaz” shows up as the artist on your iTunes.  Really, I would almost recommend this album solely on its diversity.  Granted, it stays true to the Gorillaz alt-electro-rock style, but I mean, symphonies?  And so many collabs?  Changes the game entirely.

Noteworthy tracks:

Sweepstakes ft. Mos Def and Hypnotic Brass Ensamble – The entire song is a slow build until about :40 left, when it oozes away and leaves you wondering what the hell you just heard – in a good, only-as-the-Gorillaz-can-do way.  Mos Def owns this track, too, and with deceivingly simple lyrics.

Rhinestone Eyes – Along with Stylo (check the music video), this song is most inline with typical Gorillaz.  Funky, intangible lyrics and nothing but the best in beats and synths.

What’s Good On MLK Day: Jaydiohead Mini-Review

jaydiohead_coverRemember the Black album? Sure ya do. Remember the White album? Sure ya do. So you’ll remember the Grey Album, the mashup set cut by DJ Danger Mouse which combines the two previously mentioned records.  Well, it has officially been rendered obsolete.

Jay-Z is back, this time with Radiohead.  Now now, don’t knock it before you try it, because this stuff is some of the most legit work out there… especially since its free.  Yup, free.  New York native and resident Minty Fresh Beats, aka Max Tannone, is the mastermind behind the Jay-Z/Radiohead smashup titled Jaydiohead.  MFB’s claim to fame is that he kept the Jay-Z lyrics as the baseline beat, picking and adjusting the backing tracks to fit the vocals.

According to interviews, Mr. Freshmaker decided to embark on this 6-week task pro bono, for the sake of music.  He doesn’t expect to see any profit from it.  Of course, everyone knows Minty Fresh is trying to make a splash in the music industry to get noticed. Bigger and better things, you know.

Well Mr. Tannone, splash accomplished.

Gene Simmons Talks, Awesome Interview

This is a Gene Simmons interview on NPR.  It’s one of the more interesting interviews I’ve ever heard.  Gene Simmons knows what he’s talking about.  He has wisdom, and its damn, dirt, honest wisdom.  I gotta say, Gene is just a bit of what most people would call a “douche” in the way he answers some of the questions, but the girl interviewing him is, as Gene noted, “defensive.”

Honestly though guys, this is a really good interview.  Do listen to it.
