The fourth of july. A day to celebrate the freedom and prosperity that the United States provides. Sadly, this year, I fear there is not much to celebrate. America has burned nearly all of its bridges, internationally speaking, is experiencing a long-term economic slump, and the conservative federal government is putting a lot of pressure on California (home state) to change its leftist policies (gay marriage, immigration, environmental protection). Not to say people should stay in tonight, but just thinking about the nature of this holiday makes me question its merits during these times. We need change. The entire country needs change. America should be a symbol of peace, equality and international justice. Sadly it does not stand as that symbol today, but there’s always tomorrow. More like November, which is not far off. Maybe next year the U.S. will have something real to celebrate. Like a good olympic run? Until then, party because you can, not because of what the country tells you! I plan to.
